Commercial/Fleet Dash Cam Guide

Whether running a large mining fleet or have two or three vehicles out on the road daily, we have a range of commercial Dash Cams to help monitor your team, no matter how big or small.

Fleet requirements generally require a mix of the following:

Driver/cabin recording – to ensure drivers/passengers are following road/company rules. Most people put on their best behaviour if they know they are being recorded.

Tamper proof – Dash Cams with tamper cases prevent drivers from removing the sd card and/or power cables. We hear lots of instances where the Micro SD card mysteriously disappeared after an incident.

Long recording time – All Dash Cams record on a loop so eventually videos files are re-recorded over. You want a decent amount of recording time incase the driver forgets to alert the fleet manager that an important video file is on the card.

Emergency record button – Dash Cams with emergency record buttons will save a special “event” video file when the emergency button is pressed by the driver. Depending on the model and brand, these “event” files are saved in a safe, non-looping folder on the sd card. This means the important event files are not re-recorded over so will be on the sd card indefinitely until they are manually deleted.

Speed stamped on footage – some Dash Cams can imprint the vehicle speed on the footage. Not only can a fleet manager determine if a driver was speeding or not, this feature can act as a deterrent from drivers speeding. If speed is being recorded, drivers might think twice about speeding.

Multiple channel recording – the more cameras in the system, the more areas in and around the vehicle are being recorded. We have options to record front only, front and driver, front and external or front, driver and external.

Cloud based fleet monitoring – cloud based tracking allows a fleet manager to tap into their cameras/fleet while sitting at the desk. This can allow for live viewing, GPS tracking, geo-fencing, push notifications and uploading videos to cloud storage.

As an added benefit, in the event of an unfortunate incident (whether at fault or not), Dash Cam footage can be used to assist in driver training and improvement programs.

Most popular fleet choice for a front recording Dash Cam – Lukas QVIA AR790-1CH PLUS

The Lukas QVIA AR790-1CH Dash Cam is a robust front recording unit.

This Dash Cam is used by various mining fleets that give the unit a flogging. It is subjected to dust, vibrations, heat……. you name it. The AR790 Dash Cam just pushes through.

It can take a large 512GB compatible Micro SD card which holds around 100 hours of total video files before filling up and looping over.

It has a tamper proof case which locks over the camera and prevents the driver from removing the power cord or the Micro SD card. Click here to view the tamper case.

It comes with a hardwire cable for installation to the fusebox preventing the drivers from pulling out the cable from a cig lighter socket.

It imprints the vehicle speed on the footage and has an emergency record button to lock and protect video files from being recorded over.

The Lukas QVIA AR79-1CH unfortunately does not have a cloud based feature so you can’t tap into the Dash Cam remotely. It is purely for recording while driving.

Cloud feature with back to base monitoring – BlackVue Dash Cams

Each of the BlackVue Dash Cams mentioned above has an add-on cloud service.

The BlackVue cloud service allows a fleet manager to track vehicles live, geofence vehicles with alerts, remote live view, remote video playback and remote video upload.

If a driver is in an incident and concerned the video file might be re-recorded over, they can call in and the office can manually upload that video file to the cloud for safe storage.

To use the BlackVue cloud feature, an internet source must be provided to each camera.

This can be done either via an external hot spot, like through a wifi dongle (BYO data), or by using the BlackVue CM100 modem + BYO SIM. Either option will allow the camera to connect to the net and send you information back to base.

The BlackVue fleet plan can link multiple Dash Cams to the one cloud account.
