The one part people miss: whichever camera you choose, add a battery pack if you want parking protection. It charges while you drive, then runs parking mode independently — the safe way to protect a parked EV without ever drawing on the car’s 12 volt battery. Driving-only recording is fine on the standard cable; it is parking mode that needs the battery pack.

How much resolution do you actually need?

Resolution is the difference between “there was a white ute” and “there was a white ute, and here is the number plate.” It is measured in the total pixels the camera captures each frame — more pixels means more chance of reading a plate at distance or in poor light. Here is how the common formats compare, using their true pixel counts:

Our advice: 2K is the sensible minimum for reliable plate capture, and 4K is the upgrade when you want the clearest possible evidence at speed or at night. Resolution is not the whole story though — a good Sony STARVIS 2 sensor and HDR matter just as much after dark, which is why the models above pair high resolution with strong low-light performance rather than chasing megapixels alone.

Why an EV is different (and why hardwiring can be risky)

Your electric car still has a conventional 12 volt battery, completely separate from the high-voltage traction pack that drives the wheels. A dash cam always runs off that little 12 volt battery, never the traction pack — so it has no effect on your driving range. But two things make the 12 volt a poor choice for powering a camera around the clock:

1. It is small and not built for sustained draw. With no starter motor to crank, makers often fit a compact 12 volt battery. Parking mode needs constant power for hours or days, and a small battery drains fast.

2. There is no engine to top it back up. A petrol car recharges its battery via the alternator as you drive. An EV recharges its 12 volt from the traction pack only on its own schedule, and generally not while parked and “asleep.” Hardwire a camera for 24/7 parking mode and you can flatten the 12 volt, and on some EVs that triggers accessory faults or a no-start.

This is why, in an EV, we steer customers toward a battery pack for parking mode rather than a straight hardwire. It removes the question entirely.

Isn’t the built-in camera or Tesla Sentry enough?

Built-in systems and Tesla’s Sentry Mode are worth using if your car has them, but they have honest limits. Sentry keeps the car’s cameras and computers awake and runs off the main traction battery, so leaving it on noticeably increases how much charge the car loses while parked — fine overnight at home, less so over a week at the airport. Built-ins also record at the resolution and angles the carmaker chose, usually without night-optimised sensors, buffered impact recording or the discreet rear-plate coverage of a purpose-built system. What’s the best dash cam for an electric car in Australia?
