Dash cams for BYD in Australia guide: diagram of how a dash cam is powered in a BYD while driving and while parked

Dash Cams for BYD in Australia: Shark 6, Sealion 7, Atto 3 and Seal (2026 Guide)

BYD went from newcomer to Australia’s eighth best-selling car brand in 2025, and in August 2026 it was second only to Toyota. That puts a lot of Sealion 7s, Shark 6s, Atto 3s and Seals in car parks and on job sites, and a lot of owners asking the same two questions: does my BYD already record, and can I fit a proper dash cam without upsetting its electrics? This guide answers both from BYD’s own owner’s handbooks, explains the one 12-volt rule that applies to every BYD, and covers the systems we supply and install for each model from Melbourne.

Jump to: Which BYDs have a built-in camera The 12V rule Model by model Our BYD kits Comparison Installation FAQs

Short answer. Only the Atto 3 has a factory driving recorder documented in its Australian handbook, and it is a front-only camera that records to a card you supply and plays back on the car’s screen. The Shark 6 handbook has no recorder function at all, and the Seal, Dolphin, Sealion 6, Sealion 7, Atto 2 and Atto 1 handbooks list none either. Every BYD can take a proper two-channel dash cam. The one thing to plan is parking mode: BYD’s handbooks say the 12V outlet only works with the ignition on and not to draw on the 12V for long with the motor off, so parking mode in a BYD should run from a dash cam battery pack, not the car.

Our all-round BYD kit is the FineVu GX4K 2CH with the Cellink NEO8+S battery pack. For a factory-look install with cloud alerts, the BlackVue Elite 10 2CH with the B-130A. In Melbourne we fit either onsite.

Which BYDs already have a dash cam built in?

Every current BYD sold here has a forward-facing camera behind the mirror, and every Australian handbook carries the same privacy clause about “an outward-facing camera that can be used to take footage of the surrounding (for example, dashcam)”. That clause is a legal disclosure, not a feature list. What matters is whether the handbook documents a driving recorder you can actually use. We went through BYD Australia’s handbooks model by model:

BYD model Factory recording per the Australian handbook What that means
Atto 3 Yes. “Driving Recorder”: front camera in the top centre of the windscreen, records to an SD card you insert, live view, playback and settings on the centre screen, a lock button to protect the current clip. Front only. No rear view, no parking recording documented, no GPS or speed on the footage, and clips have to be pulled off the card by hand. Useful as a bonus, not as evidence you can rely on.
Shark 6 No. The Shark 6 handbook has no driving recorder section, only the generic camera clause. Australia’s best-selling plug-in hybrid records nothing on its own. A dash cam is the only way to cover the tray, the tailgater and the car park.
Sealion 7, Sealion 6, Seal, Dolphin, Atto 2, Atto 1 Not documented. Their handbooks carry the camera clause and no driving recorder function. Treat them as having no dash cam. If your car does show a recorder in its menus, it is still front-only and card-based like the Atto 3’s.
Sealion 8 Not documented in the 2026 handbook. Some owners report a sentry-style function on this newer model; BYD has not published details for Australia. Check your own car’s menus. Until BYD documents it, plan as if it is not there.

You will also see “BYD OEM dash cam” accessories advertised by third-party accessory shops for $130 to $160. They are 1080p, front-only, SD-card units that plug into the factory camera bracket, with no rear camera, no parking mode and no GPS listed. They give a Sealion 7 or Seal roughly what the Atto 3 has from the factory, which is the point of the next section.

Why the factory camera is not the same as a dash cam

A dash cam earns its keep in four situations, and the factory recorder covers none of them well. The rear-end hit: most at-fault disputes we see involve the car behind, and a front camera never sees it. The car park: the Atto 3 recorder is not documented to record while parked, so a door ding, a trolley or a hit-and-run in a shopping centre goes unrecorded. The insurer: footage with a GPS track, speed and timestamp is accepted at face value; a screen recording of the car’s display is not. The handover: a proper camera sends the clip to your phone over Wi-Fi in the car park, before the other driver has finished swapping details. For the full list of what makes footage usable, our buyer’s guide covers it.

The one 12-volt rule for every BYD

A BYD, EV or plug-in hybrid, still has a small 12-volt battery that runs the lights, locks, screens and any accessory you add. It is charged from the high-voltage traction pack through a DC-DC converter, and that top-up happens while the car is running. This is the part that changes how a dash cam should be powered, and BYD says it plainly in the Seal handbook: the 12V power outlet “can be used only when the ignition switch is on”, total accessory load “must not exceed 12V/120W”, and, in so many words, “do not use the 12V auxiliary power supply for a long time when the driving motor is not running”.

While driving, the traction pack keeps the 12V topped up and a dash cam runs normally. While parked, it does not, and BYD’s own handbook says not to draw on the 12V for long. A battery pack charges as you drive and runs parking mode on its own.

Three practical consequences:

  • Driving mode is simple. A hardwire kit on an ignition-switched fuse, or the 12V socket, powers the camera every time the car is on. Nothing about a BYD makes this harder than a Corolla.
  • Parking mode should not come from the car. A traditional hardwire with a voltage cut-off will work, but on a BYD it is drawing on a small 12V battery that is not being topped up, against the handbook’s advice. On the Atto 3 in particular, owners and installers report a conventional lead-acid 12V of roughly 36 to 45Ah and early cars that were slow to recharge it, which is not a battery to lean on overnight. The fix is a dash cam battery pack: a Cellink NEO8+S or BlackVue B-130A charges from the car while you drive and then runs the camera for hours after you lock it, with the car’s 12V untouched.
  • Plug-in hybrids follow the same rule. A Shark 6 or Sealion 6 has an engine, but the engine does not start itself to charge the 12V while the car is parked. Installers who fit dual-battery systems to the Shark 6 make the same point: the 12V is charged by the DC-DC converter while driving, not while stationary, and the cabin 12V socket is ignition-only and rated under 120W.

The longer version of how EV electrics affect a dash cam, including how to size a battery pack for your parking pattern, is in our EV dash cam guide. This page stays on what is specific to BYD.

Model by model: what to fit and what to watch

BYD Shark 6 (plug-in hybrid ute)

18,073 sold in 2025 and another 12,094 to August 2026, most of them working. No factory recorder. The rear camera goes on the cab’s back glass and looks over the tub, which covers tailgaters and reversing incidents; with a canopy, it mounts inside the canopy’s rear window instead, and a sliding rear window needs the cable routed so it never crosses the glass. Tradies and fleets: this is the model where the BlackVue DR970X LTE earns its keep, sending a push notification and live view to your phone when the ute is bumped on a site overnight. Battery pack for parking mode, even with the engine.

BYD Sealion 7 (electric SUV)

BYD’s best-selling model this year at 17,277 to August 2026. No recorder documented. The big raked windscreen and the mirror’s sensor housing mean the front camera sits to the passenger side of the housing, hidden from the driver’s seat, with the cable up into the headlining. The rear camera mounts inside the tailgate glass within the wiper’s sweep. It is a family car that lives in shopping centre car parks, so parking mode with a battery pack is the whole point.

BYD Atto 3, Atto 2, Dolphin (hatch and small SUV)

The Atto 3 keeps its factory recorder; a proper dash cam sits alongside it, and both can run. Compact cabins with a short cable run make these the quickest installs in the range. The Atto 3’s 12V is a small lead-acid unit under the bonnet, so this is the model where we are firmest about a battery pack rather than a hardwired parking mode. The FineVu GX35 with the NEO8+S is the value kit for these three.

BYD Seal, Sealion 6, Sealion 8

The Seal’s steeply raked rear glass can reflect the parcel shelf into the rear camera, so it is worth keeping the shelf clear and angling the camera carefully. The Sealion 6 and Sealion 8 are plug-in hybrids with the same 12V rule as the Shark 6. The Seal handbook puts the 12V battery under the rear left seat, which does not change the install but does explain why we do not run a hardwire back there. A 4K front camera pays off on these: the Seal is fast, and 4K reads plates on cars that pass it.

The factory camera bracket. Every BYD has a plastic housing behind the mirror for the ADAS camera and, on the Atto 3, the recorder. Do not remove or modify it to mount a dash cam: the ADAS camera behind it runs lane keeping and emergency braking, and its calibration is not something to disturb. A dash cam mounts on the glass beside the housing, on the passenger side, where it is hidden by the mirror from the driver’s seat.

Warranty. BYD’s warranty excludes damage caused by unauthorised modifications, which is the same wording every manufacturer uses. Under Australian Consumer Law an accessory does not void a new car warranty; only damage the accessory or its installation causes is excluded. A dash cam wired through a fused hardwire kit or a battery pack, by someone who knows where the airbags and the ADAS wiring are, creates neither. Keep your installation invoice with the car’s paperwork.

Installing a dash cam in a BYD

The front camera mounts on the glass beside the factory camera housing, cable tucked into the headlining and down the passenger A-pillar. On a BYD the A-pillar trim carries a curtain airbag, so the cable is routed behind the airbag’s path, never in front of it. The rear camera cable runs along the headlining to the tailgate or rear glass. The battery pack lives under a front seat or in the boot side trim, and it is charged by a fused connection to an ignition-switched circuit at the interior fuse box, which on the Atto 3 is under the driver’s side of the dash. The camera then runs from the pack, so the car’s 12V is only ever asked to charge the pack while you drive, exactly as the handbook allows.

Doing it yourself? Use a fused kit, take the ignition feed from a circuit that is dead when the car is locked, and never splice into anything near the mirror housing. Our hardwire kit guide covers the fuse-box side, and the installation cost guide covers what a professional install involves.

FAQs

Does BYD have a built-in dash cam?

Only the Atto 3 has a driving recorder documented in its Australian owner’s handbook: a front camera that records to an SD card you supply and plays back on the centre screen. The Shark 6 handbook has no recorder function, and the Seal, Dolphin, Sealion 6, Sealion 7, Atto 2 and Atto 1 handbooks do not document one either. None of them record the rear or, as documented, while parked.

Does the BYD Shark 6 have a dash cam?

No. The Shark 6 owner’s handbook contains no driving recorder function. The camera behind the mirror is for the driver-assistance systems. A two-channel dash cam with a battery pack is the way to cover the tub, the road behind and the ute while it is parked on a site.

Will a dash cam drain my BYD’s 12V battery?

Not while driving, when the traction pack keeps the 12V topped up. Parking mode is the risk: BYD’s handbook says not to draw on the 12V for long with the motor off, and the 12V is not recharged while the car sleeps. Run parking mode from a dash cam battery pack such as the Cellink NEO8+S or BlackVue B-130A and the car’s battery is never used for it.

Can I use the 12V socket or a USB port to power a dash cam in a BYD?

For driving-only recording, yes. BYD’s handbook says the 12V outlet only works with the ignition on, which suits a camera that should record when you drive and stop when you lock the car. It cannot give you parking mode, and BYD caps total accessory load at 120W.

Does fitting a dash cam void the BYD warranty?

Fitting an accessory does not void a new car warranty under Australian Consumer Law. BYD’s warranty excludes damage caused by unauthorised modifications, so what matters is that the installation causes none: a fused hardwire kit or a battery pack, cables kept clear of the curtain airbags and the ADAS camera, and an invoice from the installer with the car’s paperwork.

Which dash cam is best for the BYD Sealion 7?

The FineVu GX4K 2CH with the Cellink NEO8+S battery pack for most owners: 4K front, Full HD rear, parking mode from the pack. Owners who want to see the car from their phone while it is parked should choose the BlackVue Elite 10 2CH with the B-130A and BlackVue Cloud.

Is the BYD OEM dash cam accessory worth buying?

The “BYD OEM” units sold by accessory shops are 1080p, front-only, SD-card cameras with no rear view, no parking mode and no GPS listed. They cost $130 to $160 and give you roughly what the Atto 3 has from the factory. For about $300 more, a two-channel FineVu with a battery pack covers the rear and the car park.

Do you install dash cams in BYDs in Melbourne?

Yes. We install onsite across Metro Melbourne for cameras purchased from us, including the battery pack, for $370 for a front and rear system. Call (03) 9350 2605 or use the contact page and tell us the model.
