Our 2020 Dash Cam Recommendations & Top Picks

2020 will be another standout year for Dash Cam use in Australia. Year on year we see increased attention on Dash Cam use via all media platforms. This attention and awareness about the benefits of Dash Cam use will be even more widespread this year. The most significant attention on Dash Cam use is in the following areas:

1. Road rage incidents – drivers are becoming more frustrated, more impatient and angrier on our roads. Unfortunately, day to day living and work pressures are being exacerbated and vented on our roads. People generally put on their best behaviour if they know they are being recorded by a Dash Cam.

2. Increase in car accidents – listen to the traffic alerts on peak hour radio, road accidents are on the rise. This causes increased road congestion, increased driver frustration and increased insurance costs. It is a vicious cycle.

3. Dangerous driving behaviour – mobile phone use, driver distraction, drugs and alcohol are all affecting driver behaviour and our safety on the road. Everyday we assist customers in purchasing a Dash Cam because they are sick of the “bloody idiots” on our road. Dash Cam footage can be used to track down drivers doing stupid things around you.

Everyone’s driving is potentially being recorded by Dash Cams which can keep drivers honest and ultimately our roads safer. Should you be involved in an unfortunate incident, your Dash Cam footage will help protect your innocence and your good driving behaviour. Maybe your Dash Cam will record footage of an incident you aren’t involved in. Your footage could be provided to assist an innocent driver involved the accident, particularly if other witnesses drive off. Benefits for everyone!

4. Media attention – Australian Dash Cam footage is now shown daily on the news and other media platforms. It is, unfortunately, becoming the norm to see stupid and avoidable accidents occurring far too often.

5. Police Appeals for Dash Cam footage – pretty much after any severe incident on our roads, police appeal for Dash Cam footage from the public. This highlights the important evidence that Dash Cams provide road accident investigators. Not only does the Dash Cam footage assist with road incidents, police appeal for Dash Cam footage to investigate other crimes like assaults, vandalism, robberies etc…

If you have been putting off getting a Dash Cam, make 2020 the year you install one. Dash Cam footage not only benefits yourself but everyone else on our roads.

So which Dash Cams should you be looking at 2020?

Throughout 2019 the Lukas QVIA QR790 was one of the top sellers and showed the best durability. Since introducing the QR790 in late 2018 it has shown the best overall long term performance and reliability of our range. The QVIA QR790 Dash Cam has been through 2 Australian summers now and the build quality has impressed us the most.

The Lukas QVIA QR790 differentiates itself from most other Dash Cams by incorporating 1440P QUAD HD resolution + 5.5 MP lens + the SONY STARVIS sensor.

It has the highest temperature resistance ratings of all the Dash Cam models we have ever sold and the build quality is possibly the best we have seen so far. Lukas back the QR790 Dash Cam with a 2 year camera warranty.

The renown Ambarella A12 processor is the “brains” of the unit and is the smartest processor available in a Dash Cam. Performance and reliability is impressive.

For longer recording times it can take upto a massive 512GB Micro SD card which is 4 x times the storage capabilities of most 128GB capacity Dash Cams on the market.

The Lukas QVIA QR790 Dash Cam comes in both a 1CH (front recording) and 2CH (front and rear recording) model to suit either need.

We have fitted out many of our work vehicles with the Lukas QVIA QR790 Dash Cam, and it does everything we need it to do.

If you would prefer to have a screen on the front camera, then take a look at the brother model Lukas K900. The screen allows you to change settings and watch video files directly on the unit itself AND you can turn the screen into a digital speedometer while driving. The K900 also has Wi-Fi so you can still pair it to your smartphone and use the Lukas APP.

The BlackVue Dash Cam range are always popular and have always featured in our top recommendations since we began selling them over 5 years ago.

The BlackVue Dash Cams are trusted for excellent performance, functionality and durability. The BlackVue Dash Cams also have an edge on style and design over any other brand.

We are happy that in 2020, the BlackVue Dash Cams can now take a larger 256GB Micro SD card. This is fantastic for fleets and those wanted longer storage time before files are looped over.

The BlackVue DR900S Dash Cam records at the highest resolution and is the highest performing Dash Cam in the BlackVue range. The 4K UHD resolution + 8MP front camera produces some of the clearest and sharpest daytime footage on the Dash Cam market. Great design, great features and a 2-year warranty make the BlackVue DR900S a premium pick.

The BlackVue DR750S is a lower price point BlackVue option which records at a reduced 1080P FULL HD resolution + 2.1MP lens. Over the DR900S however, it uses SONY STARVIS sensors which produce excellent video quality at 1080P FULL HD. We find that the nightitme video quality is actually better on the DR750S because of the STARVIS sensor. It enhances any available light much more effectively. The rear cameras on the DR900S and DR750S are identical and apart part from the front camera video quality differences, the features and functionality are pretty much identical.

The DR750S is a better seller of the two, most likely because of the lower price point and the great all round day and night video quality.

Both the BlackVue DR900S and BlackVue DR750S Dash Cams come in a 1CH and 2CH version to suit your needs.

So do I go a Lukas QVIA or a BlackVue?

The Lukas QVIA offers pretty good bang for your buck. At $579.00 for the 2CH model you get excellent reliability, SONY STARVIS sensor in the front camera, 512GB max capacity, UV filter included and intuitive features. You can also select either the cigarette lighter power cord or the hardwire cable for parking mode at checkout.

The BlackVue DR900S definitely has the best daytime quality with the 4K resolution.

The BlackVue DR750S is an excellent all round performer both day and night. This is a go-to Dash Cam model for those wanting style and performance.

We find the BlackVue Dash Cams show more refinement in terms of product design and software/app design. The Lukas cameras get the job done, just not as refined.

The BlackVue 2CH models have a SONY STARVIS sensors in the rear cameras so the video quality is improved over the Lukas rear cameras. The Lukas rear cameras contain the previous SONY EXMOR sensor.

Regarding number plate recognition, no Dash Cam brand guarantees you pick up all number plates. It is very difficult to make out license plates on all vehicles under all conditions, especially on faster moving ones coming from the opposite direction.

However, the models mentioned above do give you a better chance at picking up number plates.

Both the Lukas QVIA QR790 and the BlackVue Dash Cam models have excellent parking mode recording with pre-buffered recording. Both brands are recommended for parking mode recording.

The BlackVue DR750S and DR900S and Lukas QR790 Dash Cams come with a 2 year camera warranty (12 warranty on accessories) *check product pages for warranty specifics.

The Lukas QVIA AR790 is an exceptional Dash Cam in the mid price point range. It is a 1080P FULL HD Dash Cam which offers excellent features like a SONY EXMOR sensor for excellent video quality, Wi-Fi and inbuilt GPS. The free Lukas smartphone App and PC Viewer are both functional and intuitive.

The Lukas build quality is exceptional and the compact design makes it one of our smallest and most discreet Dash Cams.

The reliability and temperature resistance ratings are the same if not better than most premium models on the market.

The Lukas AR790 was the most popular fleet choice of 2019. It was fitted into many fleet vehicles/trucks that are on the road and recording for 10-12  hours straight per day. It is a very durable model. Fleets responded well to the large 512GB Micro SD card support, the tamper case option and the overall reliability.

Like its premium older brother, the Lukas QVIA QR790, it too has the Ambarella A12 processor.

For those customers wanting longer recording times it can take a massive 512GB Micro SD card.

The Lukas QVIA AR790 comes in both a 1CH (front recording) and 2CH (front and rear recording) model. The front camera also has an optional Lukas tamperproof case for those customers not wanting other drivers to tamper with the unit or Micro SD card.

The FineVu LX2000 is later May addition to our 2020 recommendations as it has been under extensive testing for the past 3 months. It definitely deserves to be on our 2020 recommendations for a top LCD screen Dash Cam.

FineVu pride themselves on producing ultra reliable Dash Cams and investing heavily in R&D and quality control. FineVu’s trademark is producing cost effective, LCD touchscreen Dash Cams with intuitive features and ease of use. FineVu back their products with a 24 month camera warranty.

The LX2000 is FineVu’s the best selling Dash Cam range and has a proven track record of reliability and performance. Whether wanting to record while driving or parked, the LX2000 is an intuitive and smart Dash Cam option.

All the Dash Cams mentioned so far in this guide are screen-less. They can be configured and operated by pairing them via Wi-Fi to a smartphone and accessing the manufacturer app. After dealing with tens of thousands of customers and enquiries over the years, we understand that there is still large majority of customers that find Wi-Fi and apps undesirable. There is nothing wrong with this and simply comes down to personal preference.

Many customers still want the easiest method of operation. They feel the Dash Cam should sit on the windscreen and do its job without too much mucking around, no Wi-Fi, no apps, just record. This is where the LCD touchscreen FineVU LX2000 comes in.

The clear, high resolution IPS LCD touchscreen gives the mental reassurance that the camera is ON and recording and the angle adjustment is correct all the time. The touchscreen also allows for simple menu navigation and camera set-up, no fuss.

The ultra wide 155° front angle of view ensures maximum coverage and video evidence around your car and super-capacitors are used rather than lithium ion batteries to excel in heat resistance and heat durability.

Pre-buffered parking mode recording is a must. The FineVU LX2000 Dash Cams record 20 second parking mode files when triggered by either motion and/or impact. The parking mode files are recorded 5 seconds before the trigger and 15 seconds after the trigger capturing some of the important lead up to the event.

The FineVu LX2000 comes in both a 1CH (front recording) and 2CH (front and rear recording) model.

We consider the LX2000 Dash Cams to be an excellent all round performers, with a friendly LCD touchscreen interface. The FineVu LX2000 Dash Cams offer daily reliability, fuss-free features and easy, intuitive operation.

A Dash Cam with a reliable and intuitive Parking Surveillance Mode is becoming the fastest growing requirement of our customers.

We have created a dedicated page listing our Top Parking Mode Dash Cams which have the most reliable and intuitive parking mode features. Check them out by clicking here.

The BlackVue, FineVu and Lukas Dash Cams mentioned all have pre-buffered parking mode recording which is essential for capturing the lead-up to an incident while parked. They also have customisable motion/impact sensitivities and motion detection areas to tailor the performance and settings to your needs.

The Lukas Dash Cam range has an awesome 10 second pre-buffer while the BlackVue  and FineVu Dash Cam range have a 5 second pre-buffer.

If you want the largest storage capacity for extended parking mode recording, the Lukas QVIADash Cam range can take up to a massive 512GB compatible Micro SD card. However, when in parking mode, the cameras are not constantly recording. They record only when triggered by motion or impact so smaller capacity Micro SD cards are still suitable.
