Why the Lukas QVIA QR790 Dash Cams are a BEST seller

The premium Lukas QVIA QR790 Dash Cam range was released in late November 2018, and continues to be a top seller. We are not surprised by this result as the Lukas QVIA QR790 Dash Cam range ticks all the boxes Dash Cam buyers want and need, and all for a great price. The Lukas QVIA QR790 is a smart and intuitive Dash Cam that comes in both a front recording and front and rear recording model to suit all drivers. The daily performance and reliability of the Lukas QVIA QR790 Dash Cams is possibly the best we have seen. We have now come out of 2 hot summers and have not received a single heat related issue. We expected this extremely high temperature performance as during our inhouse testing we continuously ran the camera in a lab oven at 80ºC (highest operational temperature resistance in a Dash Cam so far) and it performed like it would at 20ºC. All features and functions operated at this very stressful temperature over continuous testing.

The main reasons why the Lukas QVIA QR790 Dash Cams are a great Dash Cam package include both physical and functional attributes. These main attributes include:

1. Build Quality and Design

The Lukas QVIA QR790 Dash Cams are solid units. When handling them you know they are well engineered and manufactured. We have never been able to stock a Dash Cam with a temperature performance as high as the Lukas QR790. The extremely high operational temperature resistance of 80°C and even higher storage temperature rated to 90°C speak volumes for the quality and heat tolerance of each individual internal component.

The look and feel of the Lukas QVIA QR790 Dash Cam is of premium quality. All cables connect into the top of the camera so there are no wires sticking out the side of the unit. This makes the Lukas QVIA QR790 look much neater on the windscreen. We like that the lens is in the centre of the unit so you can centre the camera evenly on the windscreen for even left and right coverage of the road. Most cylindrical designed Dash Cams have the lens at the far left of the unit. This means if you want to line the lens up with the middle of the windscreen, the camera must be installed mostly on the drivers side which can protrude into the drivers vision.

2. 1440P Quad HD resolution + 5.5MP SONY STARVIS sensor in the front camera. The 1440P QHD + 5.5MP front camera video quality is sharper and clearer. If opting for the dual model, the 2.1MP rear camera resolution is 1080P FULL HD and contains the benchmark standard Sony Exmor sensor. Wide Dynamic range (WDR) and an Enhanced Night Vision setting come as standard on both front and front and rear models.

3. Ambarella A12 processor. The brains of the QVIA QR790 Dash Cams is the intelligent Ambarella A12 chipset which is the most powerful and intuitive processor available for a Dash Cam. The Ambarella A12 allows for excellent settings customizability while ensuring all the Dash Cam’s features operate seamlessly together.

4. Pre-buffered Parking Mode Recording with both motion & impact detection. When you park your car, the QVIA QR790 Dash Cams record 30 second parking mode files when triggered by either motion and/or impact. This is split into the all important 10 seconds before the trigger and 20 seconds after the trigger capturing the crucial lead up to the event. Intuitively, the motion detection areas and motion sensitivity around your car can be tailored making the Lukas QVIA QR790 parking mode feature very adaptive. It’s not one size fits all parking mode feature (*parking mode operation requires installation of the Lukas QVIA hardwire cable).

When in parking mode, the G-sensor impact sensitivity can also be tailored depending on your needs (we recommend setting to the highest impact sensitivity). Below are screenshots of how the parking mode settings can be easily tailored in the free Lukas QVIA software player. You will notice you can independently set the G-sensor impact sensitivity for driving and parking mode. This means you can have maximum impact sensitivity for parking mode (recommended) and a lower sensitivity for driving mode (so the Dash Cam doesn’t pick up speed bumps or pot holes. As mentioned above, can also select the motion scanning areas and sensitivity around both the front and rear of your car in parking mode. So you can scan wide or narrow, close or far.

5. Impact Detection Voice Notifications in Parking Mode

Another feature of the Lukas QVIA QR790 parking mode is the impact voice notifications. When you turn on your ignition after being parked, the Dash Cam will notify you if any impacts were detected while the Dash Cam was in parking mode recording. This notification means you can jump out of the car and look for any damage. Then on the spot you can review the impact video files on your smartphone and download them straight onto your device to ensure they are safely saved and ready to send to your insurance company or show police. To reduce false notifications, the QR790 won’t notify you of any impacts detected within one minute of parking mode activating, or the one minute prior to you turning on your engine. Impacts within this time are generally you opening and shutting your door so the Dash Cam doesn’t want to worry you for these impacts. There is no need for motion notifications because there will generally always be motion files.

6. Micro SD Card Partitioning

This sounds really confusing but it is actually quite simple and very clever. The Lukas QVIA QR790 Dash Cams record 3 types of video files:

Always Files – these are purely driving only files – 3 minutes long.

Event Files – these are purely G-sensor (impact) and/or manual Hazard/Emergency button files button files. 30 second files, saving the crucial 10 seconds before trigger and 20 seconds after trigger.

Motion Files – these are purely parking mode motion files – 30 second files, saving the crucial 10 seconds before trigger and 20 seconds after trigger.

Each file type is allocated its own space on the Micro SD card. This way, only the same type of video files overwrite each other. Most other Dash Cams jumble the video files up in the same folder. This means that an important parking mode file could be recorded over by a driving file which are more frequently recorded. Here is a screenshot of the files you see when you open up the SD card on your computer. Very easy to navigate the files you are looking for, either Always (driving files), Event (all G-sensor impact files or manual SOS button files), Motion (parking mode motion files).

The Lukas QVIA QR790 Dash Cams allow you to tailor the % of space each folder takes up on the SD card. This is called partitioning. For example, if you are going on a long drive and don’t need much space for event or motion files, you can allocate 80% SD card space to driving files and 10% space for the others. Alternatively, if you are parking up for a long time, you can allocate 80% SD card space to motion files and 10% space for the others. This will reduce the risk of motion detection files being written over. Here is an example of the clever SD card partitioning setting in the Lukas QVIA software player which can be easily adjusted:

7. 512GB Micro SD card support

The Lukas QVIA QR790 Dash Cams can take a massive 512GB Micro SD card which is 3 x times the 128GB support of most Dash Cams. This means more file storage and less risk of over writing important video files.

8. Included accessories

The QVIA QR790 Dash Cam come with loads of accessories included in the box – and all for a great price. Included is a 32GB Micro SD card and a UV filter which protects the lens from UV rays. Lukas have been generous in their offering.

9. Wi-Fi connectivity and Lukas QVIA Software Player

The QVIA QR790 Dash Cams can pair to a compatible smartphone (iOS and Android*) and can be controlled via the free QVIA App to change settings and watch/download video files. They contain a GPS processor built into the mount and will log the vehicle speed and coordinates while stamping this data onto the footage. When viewing video files via the free Lukas QVIA Software Player (MAC and Windows compatible), the vehicle location can be seen on a Google Map overlay. For those that don’t want to use the Wi-Fi feature, the Dash Cam settings can also be changed in the Lukas QVIA software player for added convenience.

It is easy to see why the Lukas QVIA QR790 Dash Cams are a popular seller. They are intuitive, highly engineered and well designed. The Lukas QVIA QR790 Dash Cams will definitely remain a top seller in 2020 due to the reliability, design, customisation and parking mode support.
